What is a Noun?

A noun is part of a sentence. Nouns are people, places, or things, and they are often the subjects of sentences. An example of a person could be anyone from a family member to a celebrity. An example of a place might be a city, a park, or even your own home. Lastly, an example of a thing could be anything from a pen to a car or a computer.  To be more specific, a person could be someone like Susan or Mary, a place could be New York City, and a thing could be a pencil or a computer.

What Are the Different Types of Nouns?

There are several different types of nouns including proper nouns, common nouns, abstract nouns, and collective nouns. Since we are focusing on teaching young children, we will stay focused on proper nouns for now. These refer to specific people, places, or things and are always capitalized.

Common nouns refer to general people, places, or things and are not capitalized unless they are at the beginning of a sentence. There are also abstract nouns which refer to ideas, emotions, or concepts that cannot be seen or touched. Finally, collective nouns refer to a group of people, animals, or things as a single entity. For now we are going to keep it simple.
