• Identify the topic of the passage:  What is it primarily about?  This is usually a broad category such as “dogs” or “climate change.” The main idea, is a specific statement about that topic.
• Pay close attention to the introduction and conclusion of the passage. Authors often state their main idea directly in the opening paragraph. They introduce the topic they are discussing and tend to repeat it in the concluding paragraph.
• Supporting details. What specific facts, examples, or explanations does the author use? These details all point back to and elaborate on the main idea. Ask yourself: “What are all these details trying to explain or prove?”
• Repetition of key words or phrases. If a particular concept or term appears repeatedly, it’s a strong indicator that it is central to the main idea. Similarly, words like “therefore,” “in conclusion,” or “most importantly” can signal a main idea.
• Summarize the passage in one sentence. If you can state the entire text in a single, concise statement, you’ve likely found the main idea. This strategy forces you to separate the essential from the extra details.
