expectations for 2nd grade reading comprehension
Reading comprehension passages for 2nd grade is more advanced than 1st grade passages. For 1st grade reading comprehension we are dealing with basic understanding where the focus is on the main idea, characters, and setting of simple stories. The vocabulary is simple and the stories are shorter and a lot easier than 2nd grade.
So what can we expect from 2nd grade reading comprehension passages?
Â
Deeper Understanding: Students are expected to understand more complex concepts, such as cause and effect, compare and contrast, and making inferences.
Vocabulary expansion: The vocabulary words will be a bit more challenging.
Longer texts:Â The passages are longer and may include more than one plot or theme.
Text features:Â Students learn to identify and use text features like headings, captions, and diagrams to aid comprehension.
2nd graders are building upon the foundation laid in 1st grade by developing more sophisticated reading skills and applying them to more complex texts.
