Possessive Nouns – Singular and Plural Worksheets

Possessive Nouns

Possessive nouns can be confusing for children (and adults).  There are two types  of nouns for this topic, singular and plural. In either case possessive nouns answer the question, “Who owns what?”  We explain both types of nouns below and have some amazing worksheets to go with the topic.

Singular Possessive Nouns

What are they and How do you use them?

When using the possessive noun you need to determine if the word is singular or plural. Based on the answer to that question you then will need to add an apostrophe s (when the word is singular) or if the word is a plural word – you add only an apostrophe (‘).

When the noun is singular whether the word ends with an s or doesn’t – an apostrophe s (‘s) is added.

For example, “the dog’s bone” indicates the bone belongs to the dog.

If a singular noun ends in “s,” you still add ‘s. For instance, “Charles’s book.”

Plural

Plural Possessive Nouns:

For plural nouns ending in “s,” add only an apostrophe (‘). “The students’ projects” signifies multiple students owning multiple projects. However, if a plural noun doesn’t end in “s,” add ‘s. “The children’s toys” shows that the toys belong to the children.

Using possessive nouns prevents confusion. When showing ownership it is important to use the apostrophe!
