Opposites, also known as antonyms, are an important part of the English language as it shows two different sides of the same coin! Not only are they fun to learn but they help to build the student’s vocabulary, as well as their problem-solving abilities.
Why are these words so important?
1. Describing the World: Opposites paint vivid pictures! Saying your ice cream is cold and sweet gives someone a much better idea of how it tastes than just saying it’s good.
2. Building Vocabulary: By growing your vocabulary it helps children to communicate and express themselves clearly and understand stories better.
3. Making Comparisons: Opposites help us compare things also making it easier to communicate and have a conversation. When explaining to someone you saw a big truck – it’s easier when comparing it to a small car demonstrating their different sizes.
4. Problem-Solving: Did your ball get stuck high in a tree? Knowing the antonym (low) helps you figure out how to get it down!
