Great than and less than are terms used to compare two values. When we say one value is greater than another, it means that the first value is larger than the second. For example, if we say “five is greater than three”, it means that five is larger than three. Similarly, when we say one value is less than another, it means that the first value is smaller than the second. For example, if we say “three is less than five”, it means that three is smaller than five.
There are many ways to teach greater than and less than. In order to teach the concept of greater than and less than, it is important to start with a basic understanding of the symbols. Show students the symbols < and > and explain that the “<” means “less than” and the “>” means “greater than”. Give students examples of numbers and have them practice using the symbols to compare the numbers. For example, ask students if 4 is greater than or less than 7. After students have a good understanding of the symbols, introduce the concept of sorting objects by size. Give students a set of objects and have them sort them from smallest to largest or largest to smallest. This will help them understand the concept better.
These free printable worksheets will help your students learn the concepts related to more, less, greatest, least, fewer and the ordering of numbers, comparing the number of objects in each group.
In these math worksheets students select which group has more (or fewer) objects. No numbers are shown. The objective is to introduce the concept of “more than” and “fewer than” first in real terms rather than representations (numbers).
Students are frequently comparing the objects for more than less than. They will do this by looking at two groups of objects, then they will be asked to circle either the group of objects with either more than or fewer than.
